Stay Connected With Nexar
Updated over a week ago

This article provides tips on how to ensure that your phone is always connected with the dash cam.

Your Nexar dash cam can be paired or connected to a compatible iOS or Android phone through the Nexar app. It allows you to enjoy features like automatic recording, seamlessly creating and sharing clips with friends and family, getting your videos backed up to the Nexar Cloud, and many more.

How does pairing and connection work?

The Nexar app connects to the dash cam through Bluetooth and WiFi. Once paired, the dash cam streams and saves the videos to your phone so you can watch or trim them later.

In iPhones, the Nexar app will not automatically connect to the dash cam if the Phone's battery optimization toggle is enabled. For more information about this setting, click here: https://intercom.help/nexar/en/articles/8485044

Make sure you have onboarded the Nexar app to your Nexar dash cam so your drives will always be backed up on your phone.

How to make sure your phone will remain paired and connected to your Nexar dash cam?

The Nexar app connects to the dash cam using your phone's WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS Location settings. Other app permissions are also necessary to record videos on your phone. If any of these settings are not right, it can cause recording issues in the Nexar app.

See the required app permissions for the Nexar app below.

Required Nexar app permissions for iOS

You can always tap on the More tab in the Nexar app to check if any of these important permissions are not set up correctly in your iPhone settings. Simply tap the Allow button on the missing permission to enable it.

  • WiFi - the app uses WIFI to stream and transfer videos from the dash cam to your iPhone.

  • Bluetooth - set the toggle on so the app can automatically find and pair to the dash cam.

  • Location - set to "Always" for the app to create a route of your drive and record the location in case of a collision.

  • Motion & Fitness - this allows the app to know if you are driving or not so it can start/stop the drive accordingly, especially if you have a continuously charging vehicle. • Local Network - set the toggle on to allow your iPhone to communicate with the Nexar dash cam to stream videos to your phone while driving.

  • Notifications - allow notifications so we can let you know when a parking incident is detected or when a drive starts or ends.

  • Background App Refresh - when toggled on, the app can perform its basic automatic functions, apply new updates, and fix issues while it's in the background.

  • Low Power Mode - disable this for the Nexar app so it can automatically start and stop streaming and saving videos in the background.

Required Nexar app permissions for Android

You can always tap on the More tab in the Nexar app to check if any of these important permissions are not set up correctly in your Android phone's settings. Simply tap the Allow button on the missing permission to enable it.

  • WiFi - the app uses WIFI to stream and transfer videos from the dash cam to your Android phone.

  • Bluetooth - set the toggle on so the app can automatically find and pair to the dash cam.

  • Location - set to "Allow all the time" for the app to create a route of your drive and record the location in case of a collision.

Location permission is not required for automatic streaming and recording for Android OS 13. Although, please note that disabling this permission prevents the app from creating map routes for your Drives, Clips, and 1-Click Reports.

  • Physical Activity - this allows the app to identify whether you are driving or not so it can start/stop the drive accordingly, especially if you have a continuously charging vehicle. • Notifications - allow notifications so we can let you know when a parking incident is detected or when a drive starts or ends.

  • Battery Optimization - disable this for the Nexar app so it can automatically start and stop streaming and saving videos in the background.

  • Local Storage - enable this so the Nexar app can save videos to your phone's internal memory.

Here are a few more things you need to know

For the most optimal Nexar experience, please keep in mind the following important reminders:

1. The Nexar app will not pair or record automatically and your drives will not be saved to the app entirely if you don't correctly set any of the required app permissions.

2. Your phone's WiFi antenna can only connect to one device at a time

3. Since the Nexar app uses WiFi to connect to the dash cam, wireless CarPlay, and Android Auto are not compatible with the Nexar app and dash cam as they also use the phone's WiFi to work

4. VPN, hotspot, antivirus, and other security apps can cause WiFi interferences, so they should be disabled when driving with Nexar

5. In the Nexar Pro and Nexar Beam dash cams, the blue light will stop blinking to indicate that a phone is paired or connected to it.

How does the automatic recording work?

There are two ways for the Nexar app to start recording drives: manual and automatic.

When you open the app, it triggers the manual recording function. Tapping the "Stream" button on the app's Home screen starts the drive recording.

The Nexar app records automatically as long as it's in the background and notifies you when it starts recording. Check that your phone is paired to the dash cam, all necessary app permissions are set correctly, and the Auto start and stop (for Android)/Automatic dash cam connection (for iOS) toggle under Nexar app > More > Dash cam > is enabled.

In iPhones, the Automatic dash cam connection toggle will not work if the Phone's battery optimization toggle is enabled. For more information about this setting, click here: https://intercom.help/nexar/en/articles/8485044
